Superstição dupla, medo duplo
- Perder, perder e perder
e logo ter, e ainda saber
que se deve perder e perder de novo
- Quase soa como o amor,
o amor numa fase inicial,
Essa coisa de que falas
- (mas a Beleza - não,
Problemas de lazer - não,
a Maturidade - dificilmente)
- E isto? Apenas metáforas
descrevendo metáforas descrevendo - o quê?
O círculo excêntrico dos teus anos.
POET WONDERING WHAT HE IS UP TO
- A sort of extra hunger,
Less easy to assuage than some
- Or else an extra ear
Listening for a telephone,
which might or might not ring
In a distant room
- Or else a fear of ghosts
And fear lest ghosts might not appear,
Double superstition, double fear
- To miss and miss and miss,
And then to have, and still to know
That you must miss and miss anew
- It almost sounds like love,
Love in an early stage,
The thing you're talking of
- (but Beauty - no,
Problems of Leisure - no,
Maturity - hardly so)
- And this? Just metaphors
Describing metaphors describing - what?
The eccentric circle of your years.
